Synology DS1815+ RAM Upgrade to 6GB
Upgrading your Synology DS1815+ to 6GB of RAM
1. Purchase compatible memory
The first step in your Synology DS1815+ RAM Upgrade is to acquire a compatible RAM module.
Synology states the DS1815+ supports: 4GB – DDR3-1600 unbuffered So-DIMM 204pin CL=11 1.5V
The Synology Community Forum seems to support that the Kingtson KVR16S11S8/4 as the best choice for the DS1815+. This is what I decided to go with and the upgrade went smoothly. My DS1815+ passed all memory diagnostics and is running great with this stick of RAM.
Alternatively, there are several other User Reported Compatible RAM modules to choose from. Just ensure that you purchase a module that is fully compatible with your DS1815+.
2. Remove six screws from rear of DS1815+
Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the six screws holding the cover panel in place on the rear side of the DS1815+.
3. Slide the cover panel off
Place your thumbs on the indicated positions and then slide the cover panel toward you to remove.
4. Gain Access to the expandable memory slot
Locate the expandable memory slot (pictured below)
5. Insert the RAM module into the expandable memory slot
Align the RAM module with the grooves of the memory slot. (It will only fit one way). You will need to insert the module at an angle (shown in the picture below).
6. Lock the RAM module in place
Slowly push the RAM module down until you hear a solid click. Note the two capture arms on both side should hold the RAM module in a locked position.
7. Reassemble your DS1815+
Reverse the above steps. Slide the cover panel back on and reinstall six screws to secure the cover panel
8. Power on and verify RAM upgrade
Power on your DS1815+. After a few moments you should hear a single beep indicating a successful boot. Log in to your DS1815+ and open System Information to verify that your new Synology DS1815+ RAM Upgrade is complete!
Nice and to the point, used just today. Thank you
Thank you. Very direct as the previous user commented. I appreciate you taking the time to post it. I wanted to see the breakdown before I bought it.

Great writeup- I was able to upgrade mine to 16GB by replacing the original DIMM and then adding a supplemental. Here is the part # I used- Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3L-1600 SODIMM Memory for Mac (CT2K8G3S160BM).
Thanks Again!
Hi, How did you replace the original RAM? I see only one DIMM slot!
Thanks
It’s on the inside of the board so you have to disassemble the unit a bit more.
Hi there!
I added the same module specs, same brand, but 8GB.
seems not booting, any suggestions ?

Johan,
I think this may be due to Synology stating that the DS1815+ only supports a 6GB expansion:
Memory Expandable up to 6 GB (2 GB + 4 GB)
https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/DS1815+#spec
it won’t work with the internal module. If you replace the internal module with this 8Gb and add another 8Gb you’ll be at 16Gb.
see the synology forum for this as well
As an addition to my previous post I found this online. might help:
